I would recommend AVG antivirus with a combination of Spybot -Search%26Destroy and WinPatrol. These are all freewares and lite on your system thereby taking up less of your system resources unlike norton and mcafee. More over these are effective than others considering that they are freewares.
Winpatrol provides you complete control over your system by alerting any hidden changes made to your system and spybot protects your system against any threats like spywares,adwares, trojans and threats in installed softwares.

Avast! antivirus will be a best one. I tried it and I am satified with the results.
AVG antivirus free edition. it's free and very light on the system. works really well along with Sygate Personal Firewall (also free).

In Windows XP Norton anti spyware and virus is already inside it.. Like comes installed already when you buy the computer.
It might be wise to check to see what your internet service provider has to offer. It might not be free, but will run from $4.95 to $6.95 per month with all the new viruses id-ed,
