Avg antivirus (the free one)?matchless

AVG is free because no support is offered for it, you have to manually update it, think what would happen if you forget, also it has poor detection rates about 80% compare it to Kaspersky 98%, Norton 96% or McAfee 94%

Avg antivirus (the free one)?norton 2008

its free and works well. i use it
CNET: "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is the most popular free solution available at no cost to home users and provides the high level of detection capability that millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers."

They make all their money from their Corporate Edition.

Our entire system changed from Norton's Corp. to AVG Network addition. That alone is over 20,000 computers. I guess all of the "noob" technical staff here decided that better performance took precedence over bloatware.
You'll probably get as many opinions as there are anti-virus programs. There is no "one" anti-virus program that will catch everything. It's just the nature of the beast.
